In today’s modern society, leisure time is becoming more and more important –anything from simply passing the time in peaceful relaxation to adventure tours exploring remote corners of the world. Accompanying this development, career paths in this sector of the economy are also becoming more diverse.
In order to provide an academic foundation for this, in 1998 Hochschule Bremen introduced the International Degree Programme in Applied Leisure Studies, which is unique in Germany. However, the programme is not solely intended for organisers of leisure activities. Rather, you will learn to approach the topic of leisure from economic, ecological, educational and social points of view as well. In strongly application-oriented projects you will conceive and help to develop, among other things, barrier-free city tours, digital travel guides or sustainable tourism offers.
In order to promote holistic and networked learning, studies are interlinked with the degree programme Tourism Management and the joint Master's degree programme International Studies in Leisure and Tourism. In the meantime, through attractive research topics and the biennial Leisure Congress, Bremen Leisure Studies have earned an international reputation.
A sound academic education with an international dimension is oriented towards the needs of the leisure and tourism industry, thus opening up diverse employment opportunities for graduates in the global leisure market. This is shown by the experiences made by graduates of the programme, who not only enjoy good career prospects here in Germany but also on the international labour market. Qualified professionals trained to think across disciplines and possessing variegated competences are much in demand. Potential employers are, for example:
During the fifth or sixth semester, you study related subjects at a foreign partner university. The degree programme maintains corresponding contacts with a large number of universities in European as well as non-European countries.

„‘I chose this degree because the programme is quite unique in Germany in that it encompasses so many facets of the leisure and tourism industry. I particularly enjoyed the semester I spent abroad and the placement, where I was able to gain important experience for my further studies and professional life.’“

An eight-week work placement in the leisure and/or tourism industry is recommended before the start of the degree programme. The aim is to familiarise yourself with operational contexts and processes in a company or an organisation in the leisure and/or tourism industry and gain an overview of the interrelationships from a technical, organisational, economic and social perspective.
