As an environmental engineer, you will learn to develop low-energy, resource-efficient processes for production and trade, and to recycle or recirculate materials to protect the environment. In order to achieve this, environmental engineers plan and design the appropriate technical processes and systems. For this reason, the degree programme initially focuses on the fundamentals of science, mathematics and engineering.
From the first semester onwards, you will apply this basic knowledge to the solution of project tasks in the environmental engineering field. For this purpose, you will first learn the scientific, mathematical and engineering basics. This is followed by a wide range of application-related subjects, such as water treatment technologies and recycling management. During the compulsory semester abroad, you will study at one of our partner universities or at a university of your choice that offers courses in the field of environmental engineering.
The degree programme has a strong practical component: Thanks to the project module that is anchored in each semester, you will work on projects from the first semester onwards, often with external partners. Students particularly value the laboratory placements and the compulsory practical semester.
Application period for the start of the summer semester 2025: 15 December '24 - 15 January '25
The international degree programme Environmental Engineering (ISU) gladly welcomes exchange students.
How do I become an exchange student in Environmental Engineering?
If your home university has an agreement with Hochschule Bremen, you can become an exchange student once you have been nominated by your home university. Your home university can provide you with information about this process.
We also welcome free movers, so you are also able to study with us if your home university does not have an agreement with Hochschule Bremen. In this case, please contact Ms. Antonia Ley (antonia.ley@hs-bremen.de) of the Departmental International Office.
Application Deadlines are 30.06. for the winter semester and 20.11. for the summer semester.
What classes can I take in Environmental Engineering that are taught in English?
The 6th semester (summer semester) is completely taught in English. Furthermore, you can do a research internship in the framework of an ongoing research project in environmental biotechnology.
You can find an overview of our courses here:
Why should I study ISU at HSB?
We offer all our students an open and supportive environment. You will enjoy a wide variety of interesting subjects, accommodating professors who see your international perspective as a valuable asset to their classes, and an impressive infrastructure in the form of scientific and computer labs.
Additionally, Bremen offers a wide range of cultural and leisure activities. Find out more about Bremen as your host city here: www.hs-bremen.de/en/information-for/exchange-students/study-in-bremen/
The programme begins with a focus on the requisite mathematical and engineering fundamentals. In the 3rd and 4th semesters, elective modules offer opportunities for individual profile building, e.g., in the thematic areas of urban planning, recycling, waste water treatment, bioeconomy, or renewable energies.
During the compulsory semester abroad, you study at a partner university – or another university of your choice – that offers courses in the field of environmental engineering. The 6th semester is completely taught in English and you can deepen your knowledge in specific topics like hydrogen technology or remediation technologies.
The degree programme has a strong practice orientation. The project modules anchored in almost every semester mean that you will be working in small project groups from the first semester onwards, and later often also with external partners of HSB. The skills labs and the compulsory internship semester are particularly appreciated by students. During the 12-week internship, you gain practical experience as well as a taste of working life. Every semester, graduates of the practical semester report on their experiences with lectures and posters, so that students in the younger semesters can get information and tips to help them prepare for their internship. HSB professors and staff support them with contacts from their networks. In your Bachelor project, which in most cases is carried out in cooperation with external partners, you will apply the knowledge and skills you have acquired.
The degree programme in Environmental Engineering is an international programme.
A semester abroad is compulsory in the 5th semester and optional in the 6th semester. There is a variety of longstanding university partnerships to choose from in the following countries: Bulgaria, Finland, France, Italy, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Portugal, Sweden, Spain, the Czech Republic, USA, Namibia, Chile and Vietnam.
As an environmental engineer, your degree enables you to work in a wide range of industries and opens the door to career opportunities especially in the following areas:
The demand for environmental engineers is high, and the trend is upwards, as the legal requirements for environmental protection and sustainable energy supply are increasing. Previous experience has shown that most graduates of the degree programme can be found in the fields of plant engineering, wastewater plants, and power supply (esp. renewable energies) as well as in the circular economy. In addition, there are increasingly more career opportunities in the fields of hydrogen production and marketing, as well as urban farming and aquaponics.
When you study environmental engineering at Hochschule Bremen, you put yourself in the hands of an experienced and competent team and can be sure to graduate with a broad and sound education that qualifies you for a variety of career paths in different fields. The Bachelor's degree also enables you to study in a Master's programme, in which you can further develop your personal profile.
