How Living Things Avoid Breaking

Animals and plants are subject to mechanical forces, which they must resist to avoid breaking. They have evolved some interesting solutions in the form of materials and structures which can either repair damage or mitigate its effects. The science of Fracture Mechanics, developed for engineering components, can be applied to understand Nature’s solutions and perhaps implement them in the form of biomimetic inventions such as self-healing structures and intelligent design. This talk will include several examples including human bone, mollusk shells and trees.
