Sustainable urban neighborhoods were the focus of an excursion to Malmö and Copenhagen by students of the bachelor's degree program in civil engineering. After a break due to Corona, students from the 6th semester of Civil Engineering at the HSB took a close look at the two cities in Sweden and Denmark from June 12 to 15.
The excursion, organized by Prof. Dr. Sven Uhrhan, Professor of Sustainable Mobility Systems in Urban Development, is one of several building blocks to make HSB's transport and mobility education more international. The excursion was supported by local cooperation partners such as Malmö University, the City of Malmö and the technical consultants Urban Creators (Copenhagen) with speakers.
In the Urban Development module, the focus of the budding engineers from Faculty 2 - Architecture, Construction and Environment at Bremen University of Applied Sciences (HSB) is on the study of sustainable urban neighborhoods: in Bremen as well as in the reference cities of Malmö and Copenhagen. Looking at the forward-looking mobility concepts of the two Scandinavian cities, the budding engineers learned to broaden their view and pay attention to larger contexts in cities. "When I build a piece of road, I should understand what function this piece of road assumes for the wider environment, for the neighborhood or even for the entire city," explained Prof. Dr. Sven Uhrhan.
Through strategic cooperation with universities, private and public planning institutions in Scandinavia, HSB is creating important approaches to innovative and future-oriented training for the bachelor's and master's degree programs in civil engineering. The excursion to Malmö and Copenhagen provides the first reliable starting points for this, and the first Bachelor's and Master's theses with partners in both cities could already be written this year and at the beginning of next year.
