As part of the STARS EU alliance, the two international degree programmes Nursing and Midwifery at Hochschule Bremen – City University of Applied Sciences (HSB) maintain a close cooperation with the School of Health Care Studies at the Hanze Hoogeschool (Hanze) in Groningen. On 14 and 15 November 2024, two interdisciplinary project days were held jointly in Bremen. The guest lecturer from the Netherlands was Dr Johannes P. van de Leur.
The project days at the HSB focussed on the importance of international health data for the scientific and professional qualification of future nurses and midwives.
The practical focus was on analysing global differences in healthcare systems on the basis of international health indicators. These included DALY values on disease-adjusted life years or risk factors for chronic diseases and neonatal mortality. Applying this big data pool, the students were able to develop hypotheses and forecasts, which they finally compared with their knowledge from the ‘International Health Systems’ degree programme module.
Prof. Dr Babette Müller-Rockstroh (Midwifery, HSB) emphasised: ‘Reflecting on global health issues not only broadens the students’ horizons. These international teaching collaborations also enrich us as teachers.’ Prof. Dr Sabine Lins (Nursing Science, HSB) added: ‘Such international formats through STARS EU bring decisive added value to the practice-oriented education of our students at HSB. ‘ Dr Johannes P. van de Leur (Hanze) agreed. According to all the lecturers involved, the project days are also characterised by their interprofessional orientation: Learning to analyse big data together also means being able to develop creative solutions on an interprofessional basis.’ Thus the binational project days were also used for exploratory talks about future collaborations with Prof. Dr Annika Schwarz from the department of Applied Therapeutic Sciences at HSB.
STARS EU:
With its eight partner universities in the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Spain, Portugal, the Czech Republic, Poland and Albania, HSB is developing new teaching and learning formats, university development and research projects in STARS EU, in which the pressing issues of the day are addressed on a transnational basis. The focus is on topics such as the energy transition, the circular economy, start-ups and innovation or health. The respective regions and their companies also benefit from STARS EU. The alliance is funded by the European Union.
