A milestone in strengthening the universities of applied sciences in the state of Bremen. In future, they will be able to independently offer doctoral programmes in fields where they are strong in research. The Senator for the Environment, Climate and Science, Kathrin Moosdorf, recently signed a directive to this effect.
"We are very pleased that the senator has taken this important formal step," say the presidents of Hochschule Bremen, Professor Dr Konrad Wolf, and Hochschule Bremerhaven, Professor Dr Dr h.c. Alexis Papathanassis. "This strengthens the whole science location." The right to award doctorates for research-focused areas at universities of applied science (UAS) creates new opportunities that Hochschule Bremen and Hochschule Bremerhaven will now successively deal with. "We are looking forward to working together on the joint process," say both presidents.
Research and transfer play an important role at Bremen's universities of applied science. With their strong orientation to practice, the applied sciences contribute to the further development and transformation of business, industry, and society. By granting the right to award doctorates, the Senator for Science acknowledges the achievements and research skills of the professors and doctoral students at Hochschule Bremen and Hochschule Bremerhaven. This supports the whole science location in the nationwide competition for bright minds.
The right to award doctorates for research-focused areas at universities of applied science was first introduced in Hesse in 2016. In recent years, more and more federal states have followed this development, and the state of Bremen has now also created the conditions for this with the directive that has now been published.
Over the past few years, Hochschule Bremen and Hochschule Bremerhaven have worked together to earn the right to award doctorates at universities of applied science in the state of Bremen. This successful co-operation will also be pursued in the upcoming preparation of applications for the right to award doctorates in research-focused areas. In particular, the two institutions want to examine in which research areas joint doctoral programmes between the two universities can create scientific synergies.
