The Applied Therapeutic Sciences degree program Speech and Language Pathology (Logopedics) or Physiotherapy aims to equip already certified clinicians in each of their professions for a highly rewarding career in the modernized health service that meets the changing requirements within the European Union and beyond.
The three semester study program was designed to suit already certified clinicians who are already part-time working in clinical settings. That is, students need to prove that they have already obtained a certificate of clinical competence (in Germany: Staatsexamen) in speech and language pathology/ Physiotherapy to practice as a clinician to attain a Bachelor of Science in Applied Therapeutic Sciences.
This eligibility criterion is easily met by most international students from around the world who are recognized in Germany if their undergraduate education has lasted at least three years and if they have obtained/are to obtain their degree from a higher, officially accreditated education institution which is officially recognized by their state.
The program encompasses four interprofessional modules, nine modules specific to the discipline, plus two optional compulsory modules, one of which must be selcted. We use lectures, seminars, problem based learning and case-based teaching to prepare students for their advanced career, whereas research shapes the course content and makes sure that students have the chance to cover the most up-to-date theories and innovations.
The degree programme delivers more advanced topics such as research methods and statistics embedded in research projects, case-based mentoring to enhance evidence-based clinical practice, and subject specific skills such as assessment and service provision for culturally and linguistically diverse children with developmental language disorders for Speech and Language Pathologists, and complex care of multimorbid and chronically ill patients as well as pain management for Physiotherapists.
We take a student-centered approach to the development of knowledge, thinking and professional identity and multiprofessional competences.
The already certified Speech and Language Pathologists (Logopedics) and Physiotherapists build on their prior qualifications to achieve a bachelor's degree in Applied Therapeutic Sciences in just 1.5 yrs.
Speech-Language Pathologists and Physiotherapists provide diagnosis, treatment, support and care for children and adults, that is across the lifespan. As allied health professionals they work with parents, carers and other professionals, such as teachers, midwives, occupational therapists and doctors.
Our graduates will bring additional skills and knowledge. They are able to access new fields of activity beyond working with patients in clinics and practices. They are qualified to provide service to the non traditional population such as culturally and linguistically diverse clients. Also, they will be ready to provide high quality and effective service provision within an interprofessional and multifaceted process as a reflective practitioner aiming to provide culturally responsive service.
